We watched this right before Easter. It is a documentary about one of Courtney's favorite subjects - debt and personal finance.
Our country has an enormous debt problem. This movie documents personal stories about a few things:
- bad practices of collectors
- people driven to suicide due to debt. It documents two college students and an older lady. These people continued to get credit card applications in the mail after they died.
- People filing bankruptcy and how it brings them total shame
- Anyone can get a credit card - the companies aren't concerned about your ability to pay back. They show that they got a retarded guy who can't read to sign his name on an application by copying.
- Credit Card companies want the customers who can't pay them back. The interest and fees are how they make money.
- Credit reports have many inaccuracies, but they have a special flag for VIPs and congresspeople, so that those can be handled with care.
- Congress does nothing to solve the problem of predatory lending. The credit card companies get asked NO tough questions
- And most importantly for Courtney it features Dave Ramsey, including a special feature of him talking.
I thought it was a striking movie, and I'd watch it again. I didn't like how it was pro-Democrat, and tried to blame things on white Republicans and George W Bush. I think that's kind of immature. But the movie's focus is concern about poor and defenseless people, and that is admirable.
Happy Birthday today!
